Antony and Cleopatra

Antony and Cleopatra

(Brief Story)

Mark Antony, a powerful Roman general, is in Egypt with Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt. They are deeply in love. But Antony gets news that his wife in Rome has died, and Rome is in chaos. His fellow ruler, Octavius Caesar, is angry because Antony is neglecting his duties.

Antony returns to Rome to fix things. To make peace with Octavius, he agrees to marry Octavius’s sister, Octavia. But Antony still misses Cleopatra.

Antony leaves Octavia and goes back to Egypt to be with Cleopatra. Octavius is furious and declares war on Antony. Meanwhile, Antony and Cleopatra argue a lot. During a big sea battle (Battle of Actium), Cleopatra’s ships suddenly flee. Antony panics and follows her, losing the battle.

Antony’s soldiers start abandoning him. Even his loyal friend Enobarbus leaves and later dies of guilt. Antony fights Octavius again but loses badly. He hears a rumour that Cleopatra is dead and stabs himself with his sword.

Antony doesn’t die immediately. He is taken to Cleopatra, who is alive and hiding. He dies in her arms. Cleopatra knows Octavius will parade her as a prisoner in Rome. To avoid humiliation, she kills herself by letting a poisonous snake (an asp) bite her.

Octavius wins and becomes the sole ruler of Rome. Antony and Cleopatra die tragically but remain together in death.

The play shows how love and duty clash. Antony’s love for Cleopatra destroys his power, but their passion makes them legendary.
