Othello
(Brief Story)
“Othello” is a tragic play about a
brave and respected general named Othello, who lives in Venice. Othello falls in love
with Desdemona, a kind and beautiful woman from a wealthy family. They
secretly get married, but not everyone approves of their relationship because Othello is a Moor (a term used for someone
from North Africa). Desdemona’s father, in particular, is angry, but Othello explains
how deeply they care for each other, and the Duke of Venice supports
their marriage.
Othello has a close friend named Iago, who
pretends to be loyal but is secretly jealous and cruel. Iago is angry because
Othello promoted a younger soldier, Cassio, instead of him. To get
revenge, Iago creates a wicked plan to destroy Othello’s happiness. He tricks
Othello into believing that Desdemona is unfaithful and in love with Cassio.
Iago lies, plants fake evidence, and manipulates everyone around him. For example,
he steals a special handkerchief Othello gave to Desdemona and hides it in
Cassio’s room to make it look like proof of a secret affair.
Othello, blinded by jealousy and trust in Iago, becomes
consumed by anger. He stops listening to Desdemona’s honest pleas and even
dismisses his loyal wife’s servant, Emilia (who is also Iago’s wife),
when she tries to defend Desdemona. In the end, Othello’s pain and confusion
lead him to make a terrible mistake. He tragically kills Desdemona, believing
she betrayed him. When Emilia reveals Iago’s lies, Othello is heartbroken and
full of guilt. He takes his own life, while Iago is punished for his evil
deeds.
The play shows how jealousy and lies can destroy lives, even
when love is true. It teaches us to be careful whom we trust and to communicate
openly instead of letting doubts control our actions.
