As You Like It
(Brief Story)
“As You Like It” is a playful and romantic story about a brave young
woman named Rosalind, who lives in a kingdom ruled by her uncle, Duke
Frederick. The duke is cruel and has taken power from his older brother, Duke
Senior, who now lives in the Forest of Arden with his loyal friends. Rosalind,
the daughter of Duke Senior, stays at court with her best friend, Celia
(Duke Frederick’s daughter). One day, Duke Frederick angrily banishes Rosalind
from the kingdom. Celia refuses to stay without her and runs away with Rosalind
to the Forest of Arden. To stay safe, Rosalind disguises herself as a boy named
“Ganymede,” while Celia pretends to be a poor girl named “Aliena.”
In the forest, they meet many interesting people, including a funny clown
named Touchstone and a sad man named Jaques, who likes to talk
about life’s troubles. Rosalind also meets Orlando, a kind young man she
secretly loves. Orlando has escaped to the forest too, running from his jealous
older brother, Oliver. Orlando writes love poems for Rosalind and hangs
them on trees, not knowing “Ganymede” is actually Rosalind in disguise. When
Rosalind (as Ganymede) meets Orlando, she playfully offers to help him “practice”
how to win Rosalind’s love.
Meanwhile, Duke Frederick sends Oliver to find Celia and Orlando in the
forest. But Oliver has a change of heart after Orlando saves him from a
dangerous lion. Oliver falls in love with
Celia, and they decide to marry. Rosalind finally reveals her true identity to
Orlando, and they plan to marry too. Even Duke Frederick, who comes to the
forest to harm everyone, decides to give up his power and return the kingdom to
Duke Senior after meeting a holy man.
In the end, four couples marry in a joyful
celebration, and Duke Senior forgives his brother. The play reminds us
that kindness, love, and laughter can turn troubles
into happiness. It also shows how pretending or hiding our true selves
can sometimes help us discover what really matters. The title “As You
Like It” tells us that life—and stories—can end happily, just as we
wish, if we stay hopeful and open-hearted.
